Our View collects writing and artwork by OWL’s 8th graders from the 2021–22 school year, when the focus of the year’s expedition was justice. Fall fieldwork brought a panel of people who have made a difference on Saint Paul’s West Side into the school, including Mayor Melvin Carter and City Council member Rebecca Noecker. Panelists talked about times they had fought for justice and won, and times they had fought and lost, and answered students’ questions.

In English class, students read Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give, joined book groups built around justice themes, retold existing stories from new points of view, wrote memoirs, and tried their hand at poetry. For their final piece, each student chose a cause they would support if they had the time or money, researched it, and wrote an argument about why it matters.

The magazine is organized into four sections: Justice, Theme, Alternate Narratives, and Memoir. Claire, Ghost, Fiona, and Titus spent their interim gathering and editing the work, creating artwork, and laying out the final product.
